As part of the John Lewis Fitness Events, Karen Pickering MBE, 4 times World Champion and Speedo swim fitness ambassador, was in the Oxford Street store on Saturday 21st January, demystifying training aids and provided hints & tips to customers to enable them to make the most of their water workout.
Pickering’s top 5 tips from the day:
Wear goggles when swimming, the best way to find the goggle for you is to do the suction test, place against your eyes, if one of more side sticks then you’ve found the perfect goggle!
Mix up your swim session using kickboard, pullbuoy, fins or paddles, as well as change your stroke for a fuller workout
Get the right head position, don’t focus on bottom of the pool instead look ahead so you’re eye line is at water level
Alternate breathing from both sides to ensure a balanced stroke, only turn your head when breathing not your waist to move through the water more effectively
Use hydro disks for a good upper body workout, resistance increased by putting fully in water and pushing arms alternatively in front or by your sides from your waist to your hips
