Athlete Support

Karen holds a number of positions across various boards and organisations surronding the 2012 Olympics and sport in the UK.

BAC

The BAC was set up in 2004 to represent the interests of athletes in Great Britain to the key decision makers in sport, and to help athletes in member sports set up and maintain athlete representative structures within their sport. The aims and objectives of the BAC are best summed up by our mission statement:

The mission of the BAC is to ensure that UK athletes in world class performance systems train and compete within a fair, supportive and transparent system, which gives them the best opportunity of reaching their sporting goals, and helps prepare them for success in life after sport.

EIS

The English Institute of Sport (EIS) works in partnership with sport to improve performances through the delivery of high quality sport science and medical support to elite athletes, through its nationwide network of expertise and facilities.

The EIS works across Olympic and Paralympic summer and winter sports, as well as English and a limited number of professional sports. As a grant funded organisation through UK Sport, Olympic and Paralympic sports are able to engage with the EIS through their World Class Programme funding from UK Sport, English sports through their Sport England funding and professional sports through their respective funding bodies.

BOAAC

The British Olympic Association’s (BOA) mission is to transform British lives through the power of the Olympic values and the success of Team GB.

The BOA’s principal role is to prepare and lead our nation’s finest athletes at the summer, winter and youth Olympic Games. Working with the National Governing Bodies, the BOA selects Team GB from the best sportsmen and women who will go on to compete in the 26 summer and 7 winter Olympic sports at the greatest sporting competition in the world.

The BOA is independent and privately funded. We receive no funding from the lottery or government and have no political interests. The success of our mission is entirely dependent upon the income we receive from our fundraising and events. The BOA is the strong, independent voice for British Olympic Sport and is responsible for promoting the Olympic Movement throughout the UK.

LOCOG

LOCOG is responsible for staging a memorable Games in 2012. They will deliver the best possible Olympic and Paralympic Games experience for everyone involved, ensuring a real legacy and inspiring people to join in and truly make these 'everyone's Games'.

Organising the Games is a huge challenge. With 26 Olympic Sports and 20 Paralympic Sports, it is the equivalent of staging 46 World Championships simultaneously. They will organise these across 36 competition venues, with 14,700 athletes, 21,000 media and broadcasters, and 10.8 million ticket-holders.
